Judas Priest Mark II: Al
Atkins - vocals; Bruno Stapenhill - bass; Ernie Chataway - guitar; John

A two-song demo is cut
that leads the band to a deal with Immediate Records, but the label folds
a mere two months later
- In 1969, Judas Priest were a progressive blues band that had none
of the members we know today! In fact, a young Kenny Downing auditioned
for the open guitar slot and was turned down!
LINK
- The name JUDAS PRIEST came from a Bob Dylan song,
"The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas
Priest"

1970
Judas Priest Mark III: Al
Atkins - vocals; K.K. Downing - guitar; Ian Hill - bass; John Ellis -
drums
- Ken Downing (who was turned down by the original Judas Priest)
and friend Ian Hill were the ones who founded the Judas Priest of today.
They were originally going to call their band Freight!
LINK
- Rob Halford was not the first front man of this second
incarnation of the band - original Priest vocalist Al Atkins teamed up
with Ken and Ian and brought the name to them.

Judas Priest sign to
I.M.A., an artist agency run by Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi and a sketchy
two-song demo is cut at Zella
Records.

Judas Priest Mark V: Rob

drums
A two-song demo is cut at
Sarm Studios that gets the band recognized by several labels, including
Gull Records
1974
Judas Priest Mark VI: Rob
Halford - vocals; K.K. Downing - guitar; Glenn Tipton - guitar; Ian Hill -
bass; John Hinch - drums
Judas Priest sign to Gull
Records on April 16, recruit guitarist Glenn Tipton, and record their
debut album ROCKA ROLLA
with Black Sabbath producer Rodger Bain
- After Rob joined, Priest cut a demo that landed them a deal on
Gull Records in 1974. At this time, the band was still a foursome; it
was Gull label President David Howells who suggested that Priest stand
out from other bands by adding a second solo instrument, even suggesting
a horn player! Fortunately for all of us, K.K. asked former Flying Hat
Band guitarist Glenn Tipton to come onboard.
LINK
- Future Iron Maiden and Halford manager Rod Smallwood signs Judas
Priest to the major-league MAM Agency.
LINK
- The producer of the early Sabbath albums, Rodger Bain, was asked
to do the debut album for Priest because Bain had become known as "THE
heavy metal producer". Unfortunately, Howells and Bain decided to
"tone-down" the final mix to make the album more "presentable" to charts
and radio. The album cover also gave a different image of the band. The
late changes did not sit well with the band or their fans and the
compromise failed to pay off for Gull!
LINK
- An unreleased song "Mother Sun" was recorded as an acoustic demo
that never made the ROCKA ROLLA album, yet the band played it live and
it exists as a bootleg! LINK
- Later re-issues of ROCKA ROLLA featured different artwork
commissioned by David Howells. The correct title of that painting is
"THE STEEL TSAR" LINK
- Ken Downing did not get his initials K.K. until their first tour
to Denmark, where a girl who couldn't pronounce "Kenny" simply called
him K.K.! The name stuck as a stage name ever since. The second K does
not stand for anything.
LINK
- The single for "Rocka Rolla" was going to be remixed and released
in the States by Tamla/Motown Records, with a US tour planned for May of
'75, but things fell through once again...

Television via the OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST and play at the prestigious
Reading Festival
Judas Priest Mark VII:
Rob Halford - vocals; K.K. Downing - guitar; Glenn Tipton - guitar; Ian
Hill - bass; Alan Moore - drums
Judas Priest enter the
studios to record their second album for Gull Records, SAD WINGS OF
DESTINY
- In late '75, Priest recorded a version of "Diamonds And Rust" for
Gull Records, but that version wasn't released until after the band left
the label and had success with a re-recording of the song.
LINK
- The symbol that graces the covers of several Priest albums and
merchandise is officially called the "Judas Priest cross", though Glenn
and Rob have both referred to it as "the Devil's pitchfork", because of
the similar shape. Artist Patrick Woodroffe no longer remembers where he
got the symbol from, but he thinks it's source may have been ancient
Egypt.
LINK
- PAINKILLER producer Chris Tsangarides had to wing it as an
engineer on SAD WINGS OF DESTINY.
LINK
- Despite the success of SAD WINGS OF DESTINY, Gull Records refused
to give the band any money to survive on. Members even had to consider
getting jobs and possibly breaking up the band!
LINK
1976
After releasing SAD WINGS
OF DESTINY, Priest sever ties with their management and with Gull Records.
Under new
management, they secure a deal with CBS Records in the US.
- The success and strength of SAD WINGS OF DESTINY caught the
attention of several big labels, who were after Priest when news of them
leaving Gull Records got out. But it was CBS Records A&R man Paul
Atkinson's determination that got Priest into a worldwide deal that
served them quite well for 15 years...

bass; Les Binks - drums
Judas Priest record their
first album for CBS Records, with Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover
producing and session player
Simon Phillips on drums at Ramport Studios
(owned by The Who); CBS also allow Priest to enjoy their first ever tour
of the
States
- Rob welcomed a rival city by accident at the 1977 DAY ON THE
GREEN show! LINK
1978
Judas Priest release
their second album for CBS, STAINED CLASS - a precursor to speed metal
They also release another
album that same year titled KILLING MACHINE
The British leg of the
tour was called "X Certificate"
- The lyrics to "Better By You, Better Than Me" are about a lover
going off to war; they are not about suicide...
LINK
- "Beyond The Realms Of Death" was co-written by drummer Les Binks
because he was left-handed and trying to play a right-handed guitar.
LINK
- "Hero's End" was the song originally blamed for the suicide
deaths of two teens some seven years after its release.
LINK
- Def Leppard recruited guitarist Pete Willis at a Judas Priest
show. LINK
- Rob got his first leather outfit from a place in London called
Mr. S Leather Company. LINK
- Marie Osmond objected to Rob using a bullwhip on the TOP OF THE
POPS stage set. LINK
- Some wild props Rob used before the motorcycle were a bullwhip
and a machine gun, both of which caused trouble for the band...
LINK
1979
KILLING MACHINE adds a
cover song, "The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Pronged Crown)" and gets a
title change for the US
Tom Allom comes aboard to
produce the band's first live album
Les Binks leaves in the
summer and Dave Holland joins in August
Priest's first live
album, UNLEASHED IN THE EAST, is released, but in Japan, it goes under the
title PRIEST IN THE EAST,
and adds four extra songs on a limited souvenir
EP
- CBS Records US division wanted the title KILLING MACHINE changed
due to it having "murderous implications".
LINK
- The title "Hell Bent For Leather" is rumored to be taken from a
verse in the song "Rawhide".
LINK
- Rob Halford wrote a book titled LIBRARY OF TEARS in '79, but it
has never been published... LINK
- The song "Green Manalishi" is about having too much money.
LINK
- K.K. bought a 1964 Flying V that Michael Schenker had been
looking at and wanted to buy.
LINK
- In Dublin, Priest were told they couldn't use the motorcycle
because it might cause a riot in the crowd, so the band threatened to
not go on if they couldn't deliver the goods as promised in local
papers. After convincing the local authorities that a cancelled show
would cause an even greater riot, they were allowed to use the bike,
with turned out to be a success.
LINK
- Rob Halford got his first stage Harley-Davidson motorcycle for
only $1.00, as a promotional tool to help boost sales of the
then-sinking motorcycle company.
LINK
- Tom Allom worked for the same management company as Priest, so he
was brought in to produce their first live album, having had prior
"heavy metal" experience engineering early Sabbath albums.
LINK
- UNLEASHED IN THE EAST is mixed at Ringo Starr's Startling
Studios, a recording studio set up in John Lennon's former estate LINK
- Rob Halford had to redo his vocals out on the balcony at
Tittenhurst Place because he had a cold while in Tokyo (where the tracks
were recorded) and his voice was not up to par representation for a live
release. LINK
- Two other songs from the February Tokyo shows were released as
B-sides, but never on any reissues of UNLEASHED IN THE EAST or any CD
compilations, and two final songs remain unreleased.

Judas Priest Mark X: Rob
Halford - vocals; K.K. Downing - guitar; Glenn Tipton - guitar; Ian Hill -
bass; Dave Holland - drums
The band's breakthrough
album, BRITISH STEEL, is recorded and released
With BRITISH STEEL, Judas
Priest also enter the music video age, a year before MTV was launched!
Judas Priest play at
Monsters Of Rock along with Rainbow, Scorpions and Saxon, among other
known names
- Judas Priest begin recording at Ringo Starr's house again, where
they had mixed their live album and where Tom Allom had just finished
producing and recording Def Leppard's ON THROUGH THE NIGHT only a month
prior. LINK
- A
fabricated hoax was launched by renowned London PR agent Tony McBrain
that got printed in the press around the world claiming the master
tapes that would become BRITISH STEEL were stolen from the studio and a
£50,000 ransom had to be paid to recover the tapes in time to launch a
world tour and have the new album out!
LINK
- Two of the album's song have gone on to cartoon folklore...
LINK
- Glenn actually had a "Spinal Tap moment", where he got so mad at
his equipment shocking him that he knocked all his gear over and walked
off stage! LINK
- Rob dropped his pants, exposing all during an April Fool's Day
show at a Levi's Jeans 50th Anniversary celebration...
LINK
- Glenn and K.K. inadvertently helped set Scorpions guitarist
Rudolph Schenker on the path to write "Blackout"
LINK
1981
Judas Priest record POINT
OF ENTRY, a solid effort, but the straight rock/pop style leaves fans a
bit cold...
The world tour was called
"World Wide Blitz"
- According to the band, the title POINT OF ENTRY refers to the
fact that Priest were a band about change, as they made a point of entry
into the new decade of the '80s.
LINK
- A second album cover was made for the US pressing, as the UK
version was too abstract and not well researched. But the US cover was
even worse and required a black and white sticker showing a picture of
the band, so that consumers would know it was a Priest album and not
mistake it for a sci-fi B-movie soundtrack!
LINK
- Rob got his feet burned while filming the "Hot Rockin' " video.
LINK
- Priest had to drop their management company and handle the daily
affairs themselves under their own S.M.A.I. (Secret Management
Associates, Inc.) LINK
- A stage prop accident almost ended the careers (and lives!) of
some of the band members.
LINK
- Whitesnake arrived in the US to join the Priest and Maiden, only
to discover their American label had not funded the tour!
LINK
- Gull Records bring back producer Rodger Bain to remix the
original tracks he had recorded for ROCKA ROLLA. These are combined with
several of the SAD WINGS OF DESTINY tracks and the result is released as
HERO, HERO. Unfortunately, the results of the remix were not much
better, and most later reissues of HERO, HERO don't even contain the
remixed tracks! LINK
1982
Judas Priest hit platinum
status in America for the first time with their next release, SCREAMING
FOR VENGEANCE
The world tour was called
"World Vengeance"
Fan response to the album
and single was so good, the tour never made it out of North America!
- The title is not about retaliation vengeance, but about an
aggression in the music.
LINK
- Tracks were recorded for an album they were simply going to title
SCREAMING, but after the band returned from a brief British tour and
played back what they had recorded, they scrapped the tracks for lack of
energy and started all over!
LINK
- The band's biggest hit ever, "You've Got Another Thing Comin' ",
was a last minute idea to complete the album when they discovered they
were still short a track.
LINK
- "You've Got Another Thing Comin' " would be used later on in a
Burger King commercial and as joiner music on the nationally syndicated
Rush Limbaugh radio talk show.
LINK
- As things began to get busy for the band on tour in the US and
managing their affairs, Rob Halford asked John Baxter to come onboard to
look after his personal business matters in the US.
LINK
- A live video was filmed in December and aired on MTV's SATURDAY
NIGHT ROCK SHOW, then later released as JUDAS PRIEST LIVE.
LINK
1983
In May, Priest sign up
with Who manager Bill Curbishley and Trinifold Management and take part in
one of the largest metal
festivals ever, US Festival
After a long stint of
touring in the US at the shunning of their homeland, Priest finally return
for a few European shows
- "Freewheel Burning" is released as a single with an extra guitar
intro not included on the final album.
LINK
- "Freewheel Burning" played live at Dortmund Rock Pop Festival, a
month before the album's release.
LINK
1984
DEFENDERS OF THE FAITH is
released. SIN AFTER SIN engineer Mark Dodson is brought back to engineer
the new album
The world tour was called
"Metal Conquerors"
- The album was originally going to be titled KEEP THE FAITH
LINK
- K.K. got ran into by a taxi while in Spain for the recording.
LINK
- It is the only album Priest have recorded where every track
(except one) was included in the live setlist.
LINK
- "Freewheel Burning" was originally going to be called "Fast And
Furious". LINK
- The song "Jawbreaker", according to Rob, is about cocksucking...
LINK
- "Rock Hard, Ride Free" was originally demoed as "Fight For Your
Life". LINK
- "Love Bites" does not contain a backwards message; it was simply
a line in the chorus reversed!
LINK
- The song "Eat Me Alive" was originally titled "Bad Girls Wear
Leather". LINK
- When Priest appeared on 'The Tube', a cameraman kept his camera
aimed at Glenn Tipton's crotch!
LINK
- This is the tour that hosted the infamous Madison Square Garden
incident that cost Priest's insurance company an estimated $250,000 in
damages and got them banned from the venue for life!
LINK
- Rob Halford laid down vocals for a demo tape of a local Phoenix
band called SURGICAL STEEL
LINK
- Surgical Steel made good friends with Rob and members of Priest
and even got to hear the new stuff before it was released.
LINK
1985
This was a quiet year for
Priest, as as far as touring went, with only one concert performance - the
worldwide broadcast
event Live Aid! But for Rob Halford, it was quit an
eventful year, as he got to record with Dio and almost with Tony Iommi. It
was also a year in which
Rob would find himself in rehab for alcohol and substance abuse...
- Rob was one of the "star" singers on Ronnie James Dio's
famous charity recording of "Stars" on the
Hear 'N' Aid album.
LINK
- Rob almost became a guest singer on Tony Iommi's solo project
SEVENTH STAR until Tony's label turned the project into a Black Sabbath
release. LINK
- The band had plans to release a double live album for their 10th
Anniversary with CBS Records. But it was also going to be a chance to
make their 10th studio album as well, so the plans changed...
LINK
- The initial studio album concept was to make it a double-album
chronicling all the styles of metal Priest had explored over the past
decade and to give it a working title of TWIN TURBOS...
LINK
- TURBO is the first heavy metal album recorded on all-digital
equipment. LINK
- The PMRC is formed in 1985 and places the song "Eat Me Alive"
at number 3 on their "Filthy Fifteen" list, giving it an X rating for
sexually explicit lyrics. Priest respond by writing "Parental Guidance".
LINK
- In July, the band plays their only concert in 1985: The worldwide
broadcast event for relief in Africa, LIVE AID. It is here that Rob
Halford meets Joan Baez, author of "Diamonds And Rust"...
LINK
- Former Surgical
Steel and Racer
X vocalist Jeff Martin wrote a verse of one TURBO track and sang on
the chorus of another. LINK
- An unreleased demo was given to Jeff Martin, who recorded the
song with his group Racer X. The drummer was future Priest sticksman
Scott Travis. LINK
- TURBO had a full-on ad campaign called FUEL FOR LIFE.
LINK
- In November, Rob was hospitalized after overdosing on a
painkiller to combat depression. He then faced a traumatic event that
caused him to go into rehab for alcohol and substance abuse.
LINK
1986
TURBO is released and
Jayne Andrews joins the Trinifold team as an assistant to the band
The world tour was called
"Fuel For Life"
- Jayne Andrews joins in March of 1986.
LINK
- The song "Reckless" is chosen by Warner Brothers to be the title
track for their upcoming film TOP GUN, but Priest decline, not only
because they would have to take it off of TURBO, but because they had
never heard of the actor Tom Cruise! It was a mistake that cost them the
chance at having a 5-million selling hit!
LINK
- Many songs are held over to the next album and some won't appear
until THE RE-MASTERS in 2001. Two tracks, "Under The Gun" and "Fighting
For Your Love", have never been released.
LINK
- A bit of controversy is stirred-up when a drummer is discovered
playing the songs under the Priest stage...
LINK
- The band faced several interesting and funny equipment failures
on this tour... LINK
- The cult classic documentary HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT is filmed
during a stop along this tour.
LINK
- During their North American tour trek, it was discovered that
Alice Cooper is not the only heavy metal master of golf...
LINK
1987
Judas Priest record the
soundtrack single "Johnny B. Goode" as a favor to manager Bill Curbishley;
then they record three
mainstream songs with UK
pop hit producers S/A/W as an experiment for possible future soundtracks
- "Johnny B. Goode" is recorded and released as a soundtrack single
to the film JOHNNY BE GOOD. Priest had missed their chance on TOP GUN
and then blow it on this flop of a film...
LINK
- RAM IT DOWN uses several leftovers from the scrapped TWIN TURBOS
sessions and pressure from the label causes confusion in the planning of
the album. One song, titled "My Design" is scrapped from the album.
"Fire Burns Below" and "Thunder Road" won't be released until THE
RE-MASTERS... LINK
- While RAM IT DOWN was awaiting final mixing, the guys were asked
by their manager to do an experimental and fun project with three top UK
hit producers. When the press found out, fan backlash caused the S/A/W
session tracks to never be released...
LINK
1988
RAM IT DOWN is released
The world tour was called
"Mercenaries Of Metal"
- During the tour, the members of the band are served a summons to
appear in court concerning the suicide death and attempted suicide of
two Nevada boys. LINK

event as Priest go to trial
PAINKILLER is released
Chris Tsangerides, an
engineer back on SAD WINGS OF DESTINY, comes aboard as producer and
co-writes one of the
album's hits
- The song that brought the original complaint was "Heroes End",
but it was protected by the First Amendment, so the prosecution changed
their plea to subliminal messages supposedly discovered in the song
"Better By You, Better Than Me"...
LINK
- The proceedings revealed that Judas Priest were far from a
devil-worshipping band of evil-doers - they actually participated in a
lot of charity work! LINK
- Priest return to Reno, Nevada to perform only a couple of months
after the trial. They make news again, but this time for
donating proceeds to the Community Runaway
Youth Services.
LINK
- Judas Priest perform "Better By You, Better Than Me" for the
first time in 12 years in response to the trial.
LINK
- Rob gives an incredible keynote address at Concrete Foundations
and is recognized as the ambassador and diplomat of heavy metal.

Priest play one of their
largest shows at Rock In Rio II in South America
The second US leg of the
tour was called "Operation Rock 'N' Roll", in honor of the troops fighting
in Operation Desert Storm
- During Operation Rock 'N' Roll, Rob Halford and Alice Cooper rode
down Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood, California in an army tank at 11:00 in
the morning! LINK
- Unfortunately, Rob Halford would end the tour with his worst
motorcycle accident - one that left the band playing "Hell Bent For
Leather" for the only time as an instrumental, while Rob lay on the
ground knocked cold and hidden by dry ice!
LINK
1992
After almost 20 years of
hard work helping make Judas Priest a heavy metal giant, Rob Halford quits
the band to pursue
other musical
ventures
- Rob records "Light Comes Out Of Black" with members of Pantera
for the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER soundtrack.
LINK
- Rob's new material was rejected by Columbia Records and
management. It was too American thrash for Priest's traditional British
metal sound. LINK
- Contrary to press reports, Rob did not send a fax to quit the
band. It was a mishandling by the legal representatives...
LINK
- Rob forms an artist agency called EMAS that helps release a
chart-topping Australian metal band's album.
LINK
- Rob joins Black Sabbath for two memorable and history-making
nights. There were even talks of having Rob become the next singer for
Sabbath! While that never came together, Rob did record a track with
members of Sabbath and Fight for a Sabbath tribute album.

UNRELEASED TRACKS:
1971 (Demo with Al Atkins)
-
Mind Conception
-
Holy Is The Man
Recorded July 1971 at Zella Records, but
never released.
1973: Demos with Rob Halford and band,
but not Glenn Tipton
-
Run Of The Mill
-
Whiskey Woman
-
Red Light Lady
-
Ladies
These were on a demo
recorded at London's Sarm Studios and sent to Gull Records that got Judas Priest
their first record deal.
1974: Acoustic demo with just Rob
Halford and Glenn Tipton
A rough-take demo with just Rob on vocals and Glenn on acoustic guitar was made for Gull Records.
The song was
intended to be a big 'Queen'-type epic. Although it was performed during the
1975 UK tour, it was never recorded beyond that acoustic demo stage and a couple
of live bootlegs (some from soundboard, but never leaked). Drummer John Hinch recalls the song "Whiskey Woman"
would open their early live sets with a guitar prelude that eventually became the intro to "Mother Sun"
after "Whiskey Woman" evolved into "Victim Of Changes".
A 10-minute plus demo
version was recorded, complete with vocals, but was finally cut to a 2-minute
instrumental for the album.
1978: Savage Studios
pre-production demos
Pre-production demos of STAINED CLASS tracks recorded in
Birmingham, England's Savage Studios. "White Heat, Red Hot" was among these
pre-production demos, and the cover of Gun's "Race With The Devil" was also
recorded during these sessions and later released as a bonus track on the SIN
AFTER SIN Re-Master.
1981:
POINT OF ENTRY advance tape
This version has different lyrics,
speed-metal pace, and spit-fire fast vocals.
1982
Five unknown titles from the
SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE sessions were scrapped early on in favor of fresh
songwriting.
1983/1984
1985: TWIN TURBOS session
These were
recorded during the
TURBO
session, as are many of the bonus tracks on the RE-MASTERS.
1987:
RAM IT DOWN sessions
|
"A
song called 'My Design', an epic - like a ride into the
depths of hell."
- Rob Halford, Metal Hammer, 1987 |
1988: SAW Sessions
-
Runaround
-
I Will Return
-
You Are Everything
These were recorded with
the famous UK hit producers Stock, Aitken, Waterman (under management of former
Priest recording agent David Howells) as a favor to
manager Bill Curbishley and as an experiment for possible future film soundtracks.
1995 -1996: JUGULATOR demos
Ten or more JUGULATOR demos which were reworked and completed after Ripper joined to suit
his more aggressive, hard-core vocal style.
|
"The songs were not recorded - just demoed, which is kind of good for
Priest because we never really had any stuff in the can. Now we can develop
these songs and get Owens involved and formulate some ideas for the next album."
- K.K., illliterature.com
|
1998
2-4 unreleased tracks from Two's VOYEURS sessions.
1999
Rob Halford's band Two started working on a second album, but only partial
recordings were made:
|
"I have some tracks left over [from the second Two album] in bits and pieces; in
fact I have hundreds of songs back in Phoenix, Arizona I have written over the
years, [But] I don't like going backwards as far as songs that might get
reworked."
- Rob Halford, Online chat November 16, 2002
|
2000: RESURRECTION
demo leftovers
10 leftover demos from the first Halford record. 24 tracks
were demoed but only 14 were released (12 worldwide + 2 bonus tracks for
Japan)...
|
"I've been listening to the 24 songs we'd demoed with Halford, and I've been
listing all the way back to SAD WINGS OF DESTINY up to SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE.
That's all I've been listening to, so my head is just way deep into Halford
land."
- Roy Z.,
Hard Radio, November 10,
2000
|
2001: post-DEMOLITION demos
Some of these were co-written by
Ripper Owens. These were written and recorded too late to make the final
release, but were considered for a follow-up album. "Whats My Name" was released
as a Japan-only bonus.
2002: CRUCIBLE
pre-production sessions
Gordon "Gungi" Paterson ran sound for Judas Priest on their
1982, 1984, 1986, 1988, 1990 and 1991 tours. Rob Halford says Gungi made
recordings off the soundboard of every Priest show they played:
|
"My house is full of cassettes and records. I have an
important collection of bootlegs. I have hours and hours of video and audio
recordings. I've filmed all the Priest and
Fight rehearsals. I collect everything."
- Rob Halford, Hard Rock magazine, June 2000
"In fact, I have hundreds of songs back in Phoenix,
Arizona I have written over the years..."
- Rob Halford, Online chat November 16, 2002

2004
- An additional 5 to 12 tracks from the ANGEL OF RETRIBUTION
session:
|
"Actually,
we had enough material for two complete albums. We probably had close to two
dozen amazing songs, and we really had hoped to include all of them. We tried to
create an 'A' list and a 'B' list of tracks, but that didn't really work. At
some point reality set in, and we came to the conclusion that we'd need to cut
down drastically to find the 12 tracks (which then became 10) that we wanted to
comprise this disc. But it is nice to know there is some amazing Priest material
already done and ready to go whenever we may choose to utilize it."
- Rob Halford, Hit Parader, November 2004
"We wrote
about fifteen or sixteen songs, and we ended up with ten. The other songs are
still good, but they didn't fit into this batch, and an album needs to flow."
- Glenn Tipton, Metal Edge, May 2005
|
LEAD BREAKS:
Here is a track-by-track analysis of each
song in the Judas Priest catalog, listing all of the lead guitar work
performed by axemen Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. Bonus tracks are on re-issue
and RE-MASTER discs.
The
info for SIN AFTER SIN through SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE is from the World
Vengeance Tour Program, the info for TURBO through PAINKILLER is from the
liner notes of the last four Re-Masters, and info for
Rocka Rolla, Sad Wings Of
Destiny, Defenders Of The Faith, Jugulator, Live Meltdown, Demolition, and the
bonus tracks is from personal evaluation, using live video footage and the
general rule that Glenn and K.K.
are usually mixed in separate speakers:
|
"...it's split...and mixed as usual so I'm on the left and
Glenn's on the right."
- K.K. Downing, Metal Works liner notes
|
Also, Glenn is the main lead player, with a darker tone
and a bluesier, more
melodic solo style, while K.K. plays more of the rhythm and has a brighter tone and wilder
guitar antics:
|
"The one thing I ended up being able to play really
well were chords. Since then, I've had a few classical lessons and some piano
lessons, but I'll never be a melodic guitarist. I'm more into aggression than
runs and scales, although I could play melodic guitar if I wanted to".
- K.K. Downing, POINT OF ENTRY tour program
